The birds are chirping, the sun is (almost) shining, the pints are flowing and the Euro 2020 trophy is so close to coming home we can almost taste it.
But, while football fans up and down the country are absolutely buzzing ahead of tonight’s final against Italy, it’ll come as no surprise that the ongoing football tournament has been causing issues among some couples.
In fact, many fans would no doubt argue that under the circumstances, the football is a priority – even over relationships.
That’s the exact message one man gave, when he left his girlfriend in a hospital bed alone following surgery, so that he could watch England play Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-finals. No, seriously.
The couple were on a weekend away, last weekend, when the girlfriend started to feel under the weather with what turned out to be an appendicitis, meaning she was forced to undergo surgery four hours away from home.
Unfortunately, there was a small complication with the surgery, which meant the woman had to stay in hospital until Wednesday, July 7. Although her boyfriend had already returned to work on the Monday, he agreed to pick her up when she was free to go.
“The timing was a bad because there was an important football game yesterday and it was really important for my partner to watch it. I am not English so I don’t quite ‘get’ the importance but it’s a big deal for him and so important, I wanted to make sure he’d see the game,” she explained on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum.
“I suggested booking a room near the hospital so we wouldn’t miss it due to the drive but he wanted to see the game at a friend’s place. He said he’d make it.”
The woman said her boyfriend grew agitated while they waited for the hospital to release her, but after things took longer than expected, he sent her a message from the hospital car park saying he’d have to leave or he’d miss the game.
“I begged him to not leave and reminded I could book a hotel, but he left without me, and luckily made it on time to see the start of the game. He said he’d come pick me up the next day instead,” she continued.
“The hospital wouldn’t let me stay another night or leave alone. Luckily, one of my friends came to get me in the end, but she didn’t get to the hospital until late and we got back to London around 2am.”
Throughout the whole ordeal, the woman was trying to contact her boyfriend but he wouldn’t pick up and when they finally spoke the following day, he was furious.
“He said I was the most selfish a**hole for constantly ringing and texting him during the game and that I ruined the game for him and embarrassed him in front of his friends. He said he cannot even look at me and that I bring so much drama with me it’s humiliating to him,” she wrote.
“I feel at complete loss. I think I might be the a**hole for not understanding the cultural significance of football and asking my boyfriend to do a completely unreasonable drive to pick me up. But on the other hand we could have watched the game in a hotel room and I wouldn’t have been left alone in a hospital in another country.”
After turning to Reddit to question whether she was in the wrong, the woman was inundated with comments telling to her ‘”dump” her “a**hole” of a boyfriend.
“You were abandoned at the hospital. After an emergency surgery. Your boyfriend could have listened to the radio, watched on his phone. Instead he decided to be 15 and prioritise seeing his FRIENDS over you,” one Reddit user commented.
“Next time an emergency comes, you’ll know where he’ll be. This guy is undependable and a**hole I can’t even finish I’m so mad.”
